THE MARCHBANKS CONNECTION TO JONAS HILL

William Marchbanks served as a lieutenant in the army in action against the Cherokee Indians in Tryon County (later Lincoln County), North Carolina in 1771. By 1790 he had moved to South Carolina and had settled in the Pendleton District and lived next to Jonas Hill in 1790. He was b/c1746 VA and d/1812. He m1/Molly Smith, m2/Molly Burchfield, m3/Molly Murphy . His parents were George Marchbanks and Ann Echols. See Marchbanks Family website.

William and Mollie Smith had the following children: Johnston, William, Jr., Josiah, Johathan, Elijah, George, Joseph, Burwell, Sally, Susan, Mary, Jane, Sally #2, and Ursula/Netty. Source: Manuscript by Boling Feltz Marchbanks and his family journal written in the 1920s.

1779 - William Marchbanks and his brother George are listed on the 1779 Jury List for the 96th Dist. SC (Spartan Division) along with William & James Hill & others. George Marchbanks had a son Stephen who died in Greenville, SC in 1805. His eldest son, was named Stephen Perry Marchbanks (c1805-1891). Stephen and his wife Rachel, of Reedy River, SC had at least 10 children, of whom the elsest son was Francis Marion Marchbanks (1825-1901). Stephen was one of the founders of the Reedy River Baptist Church at Traveller's Rest, SC. My Gr Gr Grandfather was named Perry Hill and my Grandfather was named Marion J. Hill. Just a coincidence?

1796 - William Marchbanks and Jonas Hill witnessed the sale of a slave by Henry Hill to Benjamin Barton in 1796. William Marchbanks also witnessed a 1796 deed in which Jonas Hill sold Samuel Bradcut 200 acres on Wolf Creek of 12-Mile River. This was part of a 300 acre tract Jonas bought for 70 pounds English currency from Benjamin Perry in 1792 (see the Perry Brothers page). It is not known what Jonas ever did with the other 100 acres.

1801 - William Marchbanks Jr. appears in Smith Co., TN 18 Mar 1801 when he appointed Benjamin Barton, Pendleton Dist., SC as his Power of Attorney as administrator of the Estate of William Young, deceased, his father-in-law. Witnesses: James Jett, Joshua Barton, & Samuel Smith. Benjamin Barton lived up the road from Jonas Hill and William Marchbanks in 1790 Pendleton Dist., SC.

Note: Jonas Hill's Rev. War application states that he lived in Overton Co., TN for two years, probably from its formation in 1806 until sometime in 1808. He is found there 22 Jul 1808 witnessing a deed transaction for William Marchbanks, Jr. (see below), after having married Mary Barnes the previous month (2 Jun 1808). Jonas, Mary and his children by previous marriages, probably moved to Franklin Co., TN sometime before the end of that year.

1805 Witness to Deed: Jones (Jonas) Hill witnessed a deed transaction in which William Marchbanks Sr. sold land in the Pendleton Dist., SC on 30 May 1805.

1807 - Power of Attorney: William Marchbanks, Jr. appoints James Jett as power of attorney for the estate of William Young. Witnessed by Jones (Jonas) Hill 4 Oct 1807, Overton Co., TN.

1808 - Witness to Deed: Jonas Hill and Nathaniel Newman witness a deed 22 Jul 1808 in which James Jett of Pendleton Dist., SC sells to William Marchbanks, Jr. of the State of TN, a tract or plantation of land on a prong of 12-Mile River containing 115 acres of land. Recorded 1 Aug 1808.

1832 - An affidavit signed by Henry Hill in Morgan Co., AL stated that "his brother Jonas Hill, formally of Surry County of North Carolina, was a soldier in the United States service during the Revolutionary War." Burwell Marchbanks, son of William Marchbanks, Sr., signed as a character witness for Henry Hill. Burwell lived near Henry Hill in Morgan Co., AL in 1840 and 1850. The 1850 Census for Somerville, Division 9, Household #166 shows Burrell Marchbanks b/1782 SC, Sarah b/1785 GA, Priscilla B. b/1827 AL, Sarah J. b/1830 AL, Martha b/1843 AL, and Charles W. b/1844 AL. They live three households from William Harwood b/1803 SC and wife Celestia b/1813 GA. Burrell's wife's (Sarah) maiden name was Harwood, so William must have been related. Henry Hill b/1772 NC and Sarah b/1772 SC are shown in Somerville, Division 9, Household #328.

1850 - Josiah Marchbanks b/1772 (son of William) died in Algood, Overton Co., TN in 1850. Shortly after this, his wife, Margaret, and her family decided to continue with their plans to move to Texas. Most of them settled in Ellis and Johnson Cos., TX. James C. and his brothers Burton and Jasper bought land in Hopkins Co., TX. Jasper appears to have later moved to Red River County and Burton was killed in the Civil War.

1853 - James C. Marchbanks, son of Josiah, married Nancy Ritchie of Hopkins County 5 Oct 1853, and lived the rest of his life in that county. My Gr Grandfather, Johnson Hill, had moved from Rusk Co., TX to Hopkins Co., TX sometime between 1854 and 1860.

Note: Between 1979 and 1983, one of my cousins corresponded with a Mrs. Grace Hill Galloway of Gridley, CA. She told him that she was the Gr Grandaughter of Bailey Marchbanks Hill who was b/TN and m/Martha Kuykendall c/1876/77. He had been married before but she did not know his wife's name. According to her, Bailey lived in Dallas Co., TX in 1860, Parker Co., TX in 1870, Gregg Co., TX in 1876 (where son Ransom Isaac Hill was born), and in Palo Pinto Co., TX in 1880. Bailey was killed in Palo Pinto County as a result of a runaway team of horses in 1882/83. He "came from a family that raised horses for the Army" according to Mrs. Galloway.

Note: a similar story appears in Boling Feltz Marchbanks History. Josiah Marchbank's son, Ransom P., was killed in 1874 after being thrown from a wagon pulled by a team of run-away horses" near or at the Dallas bridge." His body was buried in Waxahachie, TX.
