HILL FAMILIES OF OLD 96th DISTRICT, S.C.

County/District Formations:

1769 - South Carolina divided into nine judicial districts: Charleston, Georgetown, Beaufort, Orangeburg, Ninety-Six, Camden, and Cheraws.

1785 - 96th District divided into Abbeville, Edgefield, Newberry, Laurens, Union & Spartanburg counties.  This included Cherokee lands in the NW corner of the state which were divided into Pendleton and Greenville counties in 1789.

1795 - 96th District divided into Abbeville, Edgefield, Newberry, Laurens, and Spartanburg counties; Washington District into Pendleton and Greenville counties;  Pickney District into Union and York counties; and Camden District into Chester and Fairfield counties.

1798 - Old judicial district boundaries were dissolved and the above Counties became Districts, many of which were later divided into counties.  Counties and districts not named are not included in this research project.

1803 Ephraim Hill m/1803 in Rutherford Co. NC to Nancy Ownby (d/o John Ownby, Jr. and Nancy Ann Porter). Some researchers believe Ephraim was the son of Robert Hill, and had sisters Barbara (m/Arthur Ownby), Mourning (m/Thomas Ownby), and Elizabeth (m/John Ownby).

Abel received a NC grant in 1784. He received 3 land grants in Rutherford Co., NC on Hill’s Creek & is referred as Abel Hill of Tryon Co. (now Lincoln Co., NC) He operated Hill Iron Works in upper SC owned by Col. William Hill and Isaac Haynes (Aetna Furnace, York Co., NC). Abel sold his land in Rutherford Co, NC and purchased land in PDSC.

Isaac Hill; b/bef 1755 (1800 census: 21001-00010) This Isaac Hill has now been identified through DNA test results (see DNA Test Results, Group 1 at www.hilldna.com) We now know that he was Isaac Hinton Hill, b/bet.1750 and 1760 probably in Chowan Co., NC and died before 1840 in Habersham Co., GA. Asa (Asaph?) Hill (parents unknown). Not in census. Purchased land in 1801 from Thomas Fields, adjoining land owned by Isaac Hill on the Long Branch of the Little River.

Possibility #1: James Hill (parents unknown) of Jackson Co., GA sold 100 acres lying in Pickens (Pendleton Dist), (on waters of Saluda River) to John Couch for $200 on 6 Jan 1807. (part of tract granted Robert Samuel Parshens 1789 and part of a tract laid out for Alexander Mahan 1789)   Wit: John Hamilton, Mary Hamilton.

Territory (now Madison Co., AL) is shown selling 77 Ac on Beaver Creek FCSC in 1814 as an heir of William Hill, dec’d.
